| The North American P-51 is considered by most as the finest fighter of World War II. The Mustang outperformed the spitfire and with the change from the Allison engine to the Merlin the Mustang became the air superiority fighter in Europe. The Mustang was one of the first to use the high speed laminar-flow wing which became standard on most later high performance fighters. The total produced was 14,819 of which 7,954 were the D shown here. | ||
