Charles E. Yeager was born on Feb. 13, 1923. He enlisted in the Army Air
Corps in 1941 and in 1942 was chosen for enlisted pilot training. Chuck
Yeager went into combat in 1944, flying the P-51D. He ended the war as
an ace, having downed 13 German fighters including 5 Me-109s on the same
day. Then in October 1947, General Yeager reached an aviation milestone
equal to the Wright Brothers' first flight. He flew the X-1 to a speed
of Mach 1.06, breaking the sound barrier and forever changing the face
