The B17 established a wholly new concept in bombing, in which massed formations flying at was by previous standards high speed at very high altitude protected each other by their combined gunfire and made life difficult for intercepting fighters as well as for out ranged AA gunners. Their losses were heavy however until fighter escort to the target and back came in form of the P-51D
